And In The End, The Beatles Were Truly The Pop Music Band That Hit Home
No dyed-in-the-wool record collector who indulges in rock music could possibly call his collection complete without including some Beatles vinyl in the cornucopia, because those discs helped define that wild, creative time in our history.
The four from Liverpool sold many record albums in the States, as well as all over the world, and not only was their music widely received by the young, they scored a pervasive effect on the culture, as well. They weren’t together for very long, for such a widely revered group, especially compared with many of their contemporaries who continue to take the stage after five decades, but they are the most heralded.
Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, for example, refuse to surrender, and are one of the world’s most popular live acts, but they were relatively slow beginners, and attracted attention in recent times more as a nostalgia act. If you wanted to experience stripped-down versions of classic blues recordings, the Stones were on top of it when no other white acts in America would touch the stuff.
You couldn’t fault the Stones for showing the Yanks how to revitalize their own indigenous music, which the lads did very well, but Lennon and McCartney were the true songwriting geniuses of then. Lennon and McCartney’s records rose to the top of the charts instantly because of their infectious songs, and even the older generation of lounge-lizard crooners would slip a Beatles tune into their acts now and then to try to stay modern.
When the band foreswore the road after several years of worldwide journeys that delivered them to America and elsewhere, the members retreated to the studio and all four were never to play again together on a stage. The Beatles’ final public appearance took place in 1966 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, and it seemed apparent that they were exhausted by the years of “Beatle-Mania”, which put them in the spotlight but felt confining nevertheless.
The band was reborn as not only singer-songwriters, but as wizards who could build great walls of sound using the emerging technology available to them, as still the world’s most elite pop music act. But having worked so closely together over the years, while rewarding creatively, served up inevitable personality clashes and arguments about which direction the band should follow.
Increasingly, the Beatles were functioning more as an ensemble of independent artists than as one united front, and indeed some members created their own solo projects isolated from and without the aid of the others. And so it all came to an end in 1970, a short while since they made that initial appearance on American TV, performing their music on the Ed Sullivan show and changing popular culture like never before. They seemed to have been with us for most of our lives, but when the Beatles finally split up, what was remarkable to consider was how much they had created in such a short time.
The Beatles’ music and the band’s mark on society will likely be remembered for a very long time, and songwriters trying to pick up where the foursome left off will have a tough task following their act.
