Hi, my nephew owns a Nintendo dsi xl, and needs a SD Card to store his games and music on.

No. You do not have to buy one. I use an 8GB SDHC and it works perfectly fine. From the link above, it seems like an awesome SD card. Tell your nephew that you will be able to put tons of music and games.
